Who are we?
The Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) is the national peak body representing the co-operative and mutual models of enterprise. It is the only organisation uniting the entire and diverse range of member owned businesses.
Formed in 2013, the BCCM is a powerful and informed voice in the business community. Led by the chief executives of Australia’s co-operative and mutual businesses, the BCCM brings together the sector of businesses owned by members or formed to benefit members, with the common objective of increasing awareness of these models of enterprise.
With an estimated 2000 co-operative and mutual businesses operating nationally representing a total of 14.8 million memberships, the BCCM through its members, highlights the contribution co-operatives and mutuals make to the national economy and social development in Australia. Australia has a rich heritage of co-operatives and mutuals and the BCCM aims to invigorate the sector for a greater balance and diversity in the forms of business ownership in the economy.
The BCCM formed in 2013 as a legacy of the UN International Year of Co-operatives to promote the role of member-owned businesses in the economic and community development of Australia. 2012 was a watershed year for co-operative and mutual businesses. The United Nations endorsed our business models and declared that 2012 was the International Year of Co-operatives to help recognise their contribution to economic and social development. It was the first time a business structure had received the accolade.
Internationally, co-operatives and mutuals emerged from the global financial crisis as commercially focused, people-centred businesses with the right balance of fiscal restraint and commercial discipline, saying everything about the benefits of member-owned businesses, especially in a downturn. In the wider commercial arena, the growing focus on membership loyalty programs and corporate social responsibility shows the relevance of our fundamental business values.
By fulfilling these objectives, the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals will help create an environment where our members can grow stronger in their markets and advocate effectively for their sectors.
