SUMMARY:Reset: A New Public Agenda for the Arts – conference
DESCRIPTION:BCCM CEO Melina Morrison is speaking in an in-conversation panel on A Fair Deal for Artists: winning the economic rights of cultural workers on Friday\, 12 November. \nThere’s no doubt that the arts and cultural sector is facing a crisis in Australia. After years of cuts\, the gig economy\, undermining of the public and democratic value of the arts\, and the ever-widening gap between haves and have-nots\, the sector has been slammed by the pandemic\, with long-term consequences set to last years. \nThe way out of this mess cannot be incremental tinkering\, but rather a transformative reset of policy and advocacy – a bold new public agenda for the arts. \nHow do we return arts and culture to their rightful place in public policy? What would public reconstruction of the arts look like? How could we create a fairer deal for artists and arts workers? What kind of new ‘policy imaginary’ can place arts and culture at the heart of a healthy\, diverse\, inclusive\, and participatory democracy? \nReset: A New Public Agenda for the Arts offers two days and nights of thinking and discussion about how the arts and cultural sector could work to break out of the current impasse through a radical reorganisation of cultural practice and policy. \nPresented by: Arts Industry Council of South Australia and Reset (Flinders University\, University of Adelaide\, and University of South Australia)\, in association with the Don Dunstan Foundation. \nThe conference takes place online and in-person in Melbourne.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Co-op registry management - for member engagement and investment-readiness
DESCRIPTION:Invitation only – BCCM member webinar \nA one hour webinar covering: \n\nThe role of digital registry management in engaging members and raising and managing capital in co-ops\nCase studies from the Co-operative Farming pilot project and NZ co-ops.\n\nJoin experienced share registry provider Syndex and the BCCM for the launch of a new partnership aimed at supporting Australian CMEs member and share registry functions. \nDetail\nCo-ops and mutuals are increasingly large and complex organisations and require professional member reporting\, communications\, managing member registries and rebate/dividend distribution processes to engage and retain members. In addition\, relying on paper-based administrative systems can be a barrier to liquidity in member investments and to raising new capital by way of shares\, debentures or Co-operative Capital Units (CCUs). \nThrough the Co-operative Farming program\, BCCM worked with software provider Syndex to pilot a registry solution that helps to take the ‘admin pain point’ away from the running of Australian agricultural co-operatives and pave the way for full utilisation of co-op securities. Syndex have worked with co-ops in New Zealand for a number of years and were able to tailor their offering to the Australian co-op context of Co-operatives National Law. Syndex is now pleased to bring a range of co-op informed digital registry solutions to the Australian CME sector. \nThere will be time for Q&A with Kate Hage and Jamie Hall from Syndex. \nPlease email the BCCM to attend this member webinar.

She has created greater awareness of co-ops and mutuals and successfully advocated for and driven legislative and regulatory changes to improve the operating landscape for co-ops and mutuals. \nMelina has cultivated valuable national and international connections especially through the International Co-operative Alliance. In 2018\, Melina arranged a UK Mutuals Study Tour providing the opportunity for Australian social care leaders to learn about new forms of co-operatives including very successful employee and multi-stakeholder co-operatives\, many in health and social care. \nA highlight of Melina’s advocacy for increasing different approaches to member ownership in social care sectors like aged care and disability services\, BCCM was invited by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to support and educate 100+ public servants who are allied health therapists\, establish Australia’s first employee-owned mutual to form from a public agency. \n  \n \nGillian McFee\, Adviser Social Care\, Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) \nGillian is the author of BCCM’s paper on Action to Empower. \nAfter holding senior executive and non-executive roles in aged care and community services for governments and the not-for-profit sector\, Gillian immersed herself in understanding the co-operative and mutual business model at a time when she felt there was an opportunity to diversify the ownership structure of service providers to make way for new consumer directed and individualised funding programs. Gillian was instrumental in the formation of Kudos Services\, Australia’s first employee-owned mutual to form from a public agency and she advises CEHL Ltd\, Australia’s largest housing co-operative. \n  \n \nAnna Booth\, Partner\, CoSolve \nAnna describes herself as a “multi-perspective workplace participant\,” with a career that has evolved from being in and around workplaces all her working life. Over many years\, Anna has been appointed to senior industrial relations positions including as Vice-President of the Australian Fair Work Commission and as a member and Vice-President on the ACTU Executive\, where she also served as Chair of the ACTU Women’s Committee. In early 2000\, with business partner\, Clive Thompson\, Anna co-founded CoSolve\, advising and facilitating interest- based mediation outcomes in workplaces across Australia. Anna has held non-executive board roles\, at times involving highly complex corporate governance issues\, including at the Commonwealth Bank and NRMA. A recurring theme of Anna’s career is fairly representing the interests of vulnerable people in workplaces and placing herself in roles that have enabled her to have lived experience about how the ownership of a corporation influences its workplace culture. \n  \n \nSteve Anthony OAM\, Founder and CEO\, Supporting Independent Living Co-operative (SILC) \nSteve was an executive with Citibank from 1982 till 1996 – initially as a foreign exchange dealer in Sydney and later as the Head of Investment Management in Tokyo and finally as Head of Financial Markets in Australia. \nHis formal education includes BEc (Hons) Sydney University 1974\, PGCE (Cambridge University) 1979 and SEP (Stanford University) 1990. He is the author of Foreign Exchange in Practice and a number of industry handbooks. \nSteve and Sue have a son\, Patrick\, who has autism. They were one of the founding families of a charity called Giant Steps that operates a school for children with autism in 1995. In 2015\, they established PaRA Co-operative to run a family governed home in which Patrick lives with two housemates who were part of the original 12 students at Giant Steps. SILC was established to help other groups of families establish co-operatives to similar homes. \nSince 1996 Steve has been self-employed an executive coach but his time is mainly spent as pro bono CEO of SILC. SILC is a cooperative of cooperatives that is an NDIS Service Provider of Supported Accommodation in 10 family governed homes in Sydney. \n  \n \nRobert Fitzgerald AM\, NSW Ageing and Disability Commissioner  \nRobert has been highly influential in the community services and disability sectors for many years including as a Commissioner with the Australian Productivity Commission\, Commissioner to the Royal Commission on Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse\, and Commissioner\, NSW Community and Disability Services. \nRobert wrote the foreword to BCCM’s paper on Action to Empower and served as a member of BCCM’s Mutuals Task Force. \n  \n \nCliff Mills\, Consultant\, Anthony Collins Solicitors (UK) \nCliff Mills is a co-operative lawyer in the UK with 30 years’ experience advising co-operative\, mutual and member-based organisations on ownership\, governance and structure. He particularly works on innovation in the use of legal structures\, supporting the concept of enterprise for the common good rather than for private benefit. He is a recognised expert in UK co-operative law\, advises on modernising legislation\, and is currently the appointed UK expert for a joint European Commission and International Co-operative Alliance project to evaluate cooperative law around the world. \nCliff is a consultant with Anthony Collins Solicitors\, and Principle Associate at Mutuo\, the mutuals advocacy firm.

SUMMARY:Meet the Co-op Farmers
DESCRIPTION:A candid new podcast series is telling the stories and adventures of Australian farmers transforming their businesses by working together. \nFeaturing leading primary producers\, the eight-episode podcast Meet the Co-op Farmers will address some of the biggest issues in farming and put forward solutions aimed at future-proofing Australian family farms. \nThe first two episodes have gone live this week. The first interview explores the David and Goliath battle of the Victorian Mountain Milk dairy co-operative\, forced to fight for their survival after the collapse of Murray Goulburn. Mountain Milk Chair Stuart Crosthwaite tells renowned agricultural journalist Pete Lewis: “We were not receiving a fair market price for our milk. We had lots and lots of outstanding bills. It was unbelievably stressful financially. I was questioning whether I wanted to be farming any more. The co-op structure really hit a cord with us\, because everyone was equal.” \nOther co-operative farmers at the forefront of agriculture interviewed include Sweeter Bananas Doriana Mangili\, Larry McHugh from nut powerhouse Marquis Macadamias and Natalie Browning from one of the world’s biggest co-operatives\, CBH. \nFarmers\, fishers and other primary producers are known for their resilience\, but in the last few years they have faced unprecedented challenges: drought\, fires\, floods\, global commodity and export market impacts and COVID-19 restrictions. Co-operative farming is seen as giving farmers competitive advantage and market power by scaling\, collaborating and innovating. \nMelina Morrison\, CEO of the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) said: “The stories we are telling are inspiring in this period of upheaval. Through the experiences of other farmers and education from experts\, this podcast series will show primary producers how they can build resilience and growth in their business by coming together in a co-operative. Farmers tell their warts-and-all stories of coming together in co-operatives to make sure they cut out the middle man and take back the supply chain.” \nIt is available for download on iTunes\, Spotify and all good podcast hosting platforms. Or you can subscribe at coopfarming.coop/podcasts \nMeet the Co-op Farmers podcast\nMAY 13 \nThe little dairy co-operative that could – Stuart Crosthwaite\, Mountain Milk \nHow a little banana saved our farms – Doriana Mangili\, Sweeter Banana \n+ Extras: Meet the Co-op Farmers \nMAY 20 \nHow Australia’s largest grain exporter works – Natalie Browning\, CBH \nMAY 27 \nA fishing co-op formed with friendship – Rodger Long\, Limestone Coast \nJUNE 3 \nThe farmer-owned berry company making $200 million a year – Stephen Thandi\, Oz Group and fruit co-operatives \nJUNE 10 \nHow travelling the world’s farms helped Emma find the best way to run her huge cattle business – Emma Robinson\, Beef Collaboration Project \nJUNE 17 \nWhat’s at the heart of a community co-operative? – Kerry Murphy\, TAFCO \nJUNE 24 \nSecrets of the world’s biggest macadamia processing plant – Larry McHugh\, Marquis Macadamias

SUMMARY:CoopConnect Workshops
DESCRIPTION:The BCCM in conjunction with Professor Emmanuel Josserand at the UTS Centre for Business and Social Innovation (CBSI)\, have launched a research report CoopConnect: A Coop Eco-System to enhance connectivity and promote innovation in the Cooperative Enterprise sector. \nThis report presents CoopConnect\, an initiative to transform the co-operative and mutual enterprise (CME) sector by creating an innovative environment that will leverage their distinctive capabilities. CoopConnect also proposes a branding collaboration supporting CMEs to broadcast their distinctive position as community oriented\, sustainable and socially responsible enterprises. \nThis study identified the following common challenges and opportunities for innovation in CMEs in Australia: \n\nCMEs are (unfairly) perceived as lacking innovation\nA need for more awareness of CMEs by consumers and potential business partners\nA need to improve connectivity between CMEs\nThe challenge of talent acquisition\, both in hiring staff (who may have misconceptions about salary or working conditions) and attracting board directors\nThe challenge and opportunities in starting a CME\n\nCoopConnect Workshops\nAs part of the CoopConnect project\, 3 focussed workshops will be run to provide industry consultation on three emerging ideas for enhanced industry collaboration and business development: \n 1. Communication and branding\nWhen: Tuesday 23 March\, 9am – 12.30pm \nWhere: UTS CBSI-Dr Chau Chak Wing Building\, 14-28 Ultimo Road\, Ultimo or online \nThe objective is not to create a new brand for co-ops and mutuals\, but rather to ensure that the millions of members that are part of the co-op/mutual movement receive a coordinated message. This message should demonstrate the importance for our society of the principles. There could be a common and coordinated communication effort across BCCM members to relay this message with a strong multiplication effect. This can be achieved through existing communication channels\, without creating a new brand. We need to bring BCCM members to that level; communicating with them but also helping them through implementation. This will include websites\, social media and maybe some more specific operations. A related question is that of accreditation and whether it is through a specific scheme or in relation to existing schemes\, such as B-Corp. \n2. Entrepreneurial and financial ecosystem\nWhen: Wednesday 31 March\, 9am – 12.30pm \nWhere: UTS CBSI-Dr Chau Chak Wing Building\, 14-28 Ultimo Road\, Ultimo or online \nThis topic is a priority and essential to further the benefit of a larger coop/mutual footprint in Australia. While there is a first CME ‘incubator’\, more can be done to create new co-ops and mutuals and support the broader diffusion of the values that come with such enterprises. A full eco-system should be created that spans the different stages of start-up development. This aspect would include like-minded investors that are ready to support new co-ops and mutuals and potentially using the new mutual capital instruments. \n 3. Innovation and business market place\nWhen: Wednesday 31 March\, 1pm – 4.30pm \nWhere: UTS CBSI-Dr Chau Chak Wing Building\, 14-28 Ultimo Road\, Ultimo or online \nThere is a need to develop the question of joint innovation and doing business together as a first priority. Existing ‘marketplaces’ focus on joint purchases to generate economies of scale but doesn’t favour the development of business between co-ops and mutuals. A first step would be to focus the marketplace on business to business activities between co-ops and mutuals but also to develop the demand by non-coops for products coming from co-ops and mutuals. A second step could be to open for business to consumer activities. Regarding innovation\, a first step is to created communities of practices around the development of joint projects. A more ambitious innovation platform\, with principles of open innovation between co-ops and between co-ops and others can also be envisioned. \nPlease RSVP to Nicole.Vlakic@bccm.coop stating if you can attend in person or online. \nWe hope you can join us to share your ideas and insights.
