SUMMARY:Meet the Co-op Farmers
DESCRIPTION:A candid new podcast series is telling the stories and adventures of Australian farmers transforming their businesses by working together. \nFeaturing leading primary producers\, the eight-episode podcast Meet the Co-op Farmers will address some of the biggest issues in farming and put forward solutions aimed at future-proofing Australian family farms. \nThe first two episodes have gone live this week. The first interview explores the David and Goliath battle of the Victorian Mountain Milk dairy co-operative\, forced to fight for their survival after the collapse of Murray Goulburn. Mountain Milk Chair Stuart Crosthwaite tells renowned agricultural journalist Pete Lewis: “We were not receiving a fair market price for our milk. We had lots and lots of outstanding bills. It was unbelievably stressful financially. I was questioning whether I wanted to be farming any more. SUMMARY:CoopConnect Workshops
DESCRIPTION:The BCCM in conjunction with Professor Emmanuel Josserand at the UTS Centre for Business and Social Innovation (CBSI)\, have launched a research report CoopConnect: A Coop Eco-System to enhance connectivity and promote innovation in the Cooperative Enterprise sector. \nThis report presents CoopConnect\, an initiative to transform the co-operative and mutual enterprise (CME) sector by creating an innovative environment that will leverage their distinctive capabilities. CoopConnect also proposes a branding collaboration supporting CMEs to broadcast their distinctive position as community oriented\, sustainable and socially responsible enterprises. \nThis study identified the following common challenges and opportunities for innovation in CMEs in Australia: \n\nCMEs are (unfairly) perceived as lacking innovation\nA need for more awareness of CMEs by consumers and potential business partners\nA need to improve connectivity between CMEs\nThe challenge of talent acquisition\, both in hiring staff (who may have misconceptions about salary or working conditions) and attracting board directors\nThe challenge and opportunities in starting a CME\n\nCoopConnect Workshops\nAs part of the CoopConnect project\, 3 focussed workshops will be run to provide industry consultation on three emerging ideas for enhanced industry collaboration and business development: \n 1. Communication and branding\nWhen: Tuesday 23 March\, 9am – 12.30pm \nWhere: UTS CBSI-Dr Chau Chak Wing Building\, 14-28 Ultimo Road\, Ultimo or online \nThe objective is not to create a new brand for co-ops and mutuals\, but rather to ensure that the millions of members that are part of the co-op/mutual movement receive a coordinated message. This message should demonstrate the importance for our society of the principles. There could be a common and coordinated communication effort across BCCM members to relay this message with a strong multiplication effect. This can be achieved through existing communication channels\, without creating a new brand. We need to bring BCCM members to that level; communicating with them but also helping them through implementation. This will include websites\, social media and maybe some more specific operations. A related question is that of accreditation and whether it is through a specific scheme or in relation to existing schemes\, such as B-Corp. \n2. Entrepreneurial and financial ecosystem\nWhen: Wednesday 31 March\, 9am – 12.30pm \nWhere: UTS CBSI-Dr Chau Chak Wing Building\, 14-28 Ultimo Road\, Ultimo or online \nThis topic is a priority and essential to further the benefit of a larger coop/mutual footprint in Australia. While there is a first CME ‘incubator’\, more can be done to create new co-ops and mutuals and support the broader diffusion of the values that come with such enterprises. A full eco-system should be created that spans the different stages of start-up development. This aspect would include like-minded investors that are ready to support new co-ops and mutuals and potentially using the new mutual capital instruments. \n 3. Innovation and business market place\nWhen: Wednesday 31 March\, 1pm – 4.30pm \nWhere: UTS CBSI-Dr Chau Chak Wing Building\, 14-28 Ultimo Road\, Ultimo or online \nThere is a need to develop the question of joint innovation and doing business together as a first priority. Existing ‘marketplaces’ focus on joint purchases to generate economies of scale but doesn’t favour the development of business between co-ops and mutuals. A first step would be to focus the marketplace on business to business activities between co-ops and mutuals but also to develop the demand by non-coops for products coming from co-ops and mutuals. A second step could be to open for business to consumer activities. Regarding innovation\, a first step is to created communities of practices around the development of joint projects. A more ambitious innovation platform\, with principles of open innovation between co-ops and between co-ops and others can also be envisioned. \nPlease RSVP to Nicole.Vlakic@bccm.coop stating if you can attend in person or online. \nWe hope you can join us to share your ideas and insights.

SUMMARY:Co-operative Conversations Episode 10
DESCRIPTION:Are you a farmer\, fisher or forester interested in setting up\, or improving the running of your co-operative\, and you’ve been told that it’s harder to raise capital in a co-op or to obtain loans? SUMMARY:Co-operative Conversations Episode 7
DESCRIPTION:Episode 7  Part 1: Interview – The co-operative advantage\n6.30 pm –  7.15 pm AEST – Interview \nFiercely proud of their 100% Australian ownership\, Oz Group Co-op is passionate about providing their community with the freshest blueberries\, raspberries and blackberries through sustainable farming. \nFormed in 2001 as a partnership between four Coffs Coast growers. It became a co-op in 2013. After completing a Certificate III in Horticulture\, he joined Oz Berries in 2005 in order to focus on farming with the knowledge that his fruit would be quality controlled\, packed and marketed for him. Stephen was encouraged by other members of the co-op to nominate for the board of directors in 2014 due to his life experience running his glass businesses for 30 years. \nHe sees the strength of the co-op in its collective nature: that when working together local farmers can achieve better things. He will talk about their transition from bananas to berries to the large business they are today\, their journey into America and a Driscoll’s partnership\, as well as how the different farmers all managed to work together in order to achieve stronger buying and selling power. \nWatch on demand \nEpisode 7 Part 2: Roundtable 0  How to leverage paddock to plate and farmer-owned\n7.45 pm –  8.45 pm AEST – Roundtable discussion \nThis is about how co-ops can give you a marketing advantage that is leveraging the zeitgeist about Aussie produced and paddock to plate. \nHear all about the innovative co-operatives marketing truffles\, dairy products and berries and using their collaborative structure as a powerful marketing tool when Pete Lewis speaks to the experts from some of Australia’s most innovative farming co-operatives. \nThey will share how they take advantage of their co-operative structure and membership for consumer advantage. Are their difficulties finding consensus in marketing and branding? What kind of support have they received? \nThey also explore world best practice and talk about the importance of distribution\, community and educating consumers. \nJoin journalist Pete Lewis with special guests. \nWatch on demand \nJoin Pete Lewis for an inspiring interview series as he explores the journeys of some of Australia’s most interesting and successful co-operatives.
