She held the position of Legal Manager for the NSW Registrar of Co-operatives and provided drafting instructions for the Co-operatives National Law. As a consultant she provided advisory services for new co-operative start-ups\, and authored the Community Investment Handbook for Australian Co-operatives. Robyn has provided strategic regulatory advice to the BCCM for over 10 years and led the development team for the Co-op Builder\, Australia’s only free drafting resource for new co-operative formations. Her later work for the BCCM was to draft the Capital Builder\, providing step by step guidance for co-operative fundraising as well as providing content for the  BCCM training courses on the BCCM Co-operative Farming website. She is continuing research on fundraising avenues and its regulatory constraints under Australian laws. \n  \n \nDavid Fraser\, Group Chief Executive Officer\, Capricorn Society\n\nDavid has over 38 years’ experience in the automotive industry and has held senior sales\, marketing and general management roles over the past two decades. Prior to his appointment as Capricorn’s Group Chief Executive Officer in July 2019 he was CEO of the co-operative’s Automotive Division from 2013. \nBefore joining Capricorn in 2006\, David was Group General Manager of Supply Direct\, a wholly owned subsidiary of ASX-listed Ausdrill\, and responsible for its operations in Australia\, United Kingdom\, South Africa and West Africa. He was also a former Associate Director and Group General Manager of ASX-listed Coventry Group Ltd and was responsible for the sales\, marketing and administration of the Group’s automotive businesses. He is a current Director of various Capricorn subsidiary Boards\, Councillor of the Co-operatives Federation of WA\, and a Director and current Chair of Western Australian Motor Industry Foundation. A casual comment by Cootamundra resident Leigh Bowden\, “why don’t we start a co-op?”\, marked the start of a long but exciting journey that has seen substantial progress made towards opening a member-owned retail co-op in the town. The Cootamundra District Co-op opened its doors on 3 August 2023. \nIn addition to her role as Chair of the Cootamundra District Co-op\, Leigh is also an elected Councillor at Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council. \nLeigh holds a BA Dip Ed\, an MA in Women’s Studies and an Advanced Diploma in Applied Aboriginal Studies. She has worked as a casual academic for several universities in the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme. \nBefore moving to Cootamundra\, from Sydney\, Leigh owned and managed her own small business\, in addition to working as the National Community Relations Manager for a not-for-profit organisation. \nIn Cootamundra\, prior to being elected to Council\, Leigh was a member of The Arts Centre Cootamundra Committee\, the Course Coordinator of U3A and the non-Indigenous Project Officer of the Cootamundra Aboriginal Working Group. She continues to be a member of the Cootamundra Aboriginal Working Party\, the Council representative on The Arts Centre Cootamundra Committee and the Ellwood’s Hall Committee and represents CGRC on the Eastern Riverina Arts Advisory Committee. She is also Country Vice President of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (NSW). \n  \n\n \n\nTrish Ridsdale\, Managing Director\, BoardBusiness\nTrish is an experienced Independent Company Director\, Chair and specialist consultant. DESCRIPTION:Key outcomes from the European housing co-operative sectors study tour\n\nWhat Australia can learn from European affordable co-operative rental housing models: A report on findings from the BCCM 2024 European Co-op Housing study tour\nUnlocking the “Missing Middle”: Lessons from the European co-operative housing sector\nFind out about BCCM study tours\n\n\nStudy tour\n\nVisit Copenhagen\, Vienna and Zurich\nExplore Europe’s large affordable co-op housing sectors for answers to the Australian housing crisis\nAn intimate learning experience\nSuitable for key decision makers with an interest in addressing the current housing crisis\, including: elected representatives and senior policymakers at all levels of government; philanthropic and community foundation representatives; superannuation executives; co-operative housing bodies; mutual housing lenders; and other co-ops and mutuals\nLearn from co-op housing experts in each country and by your guide Dr Sidsel Grimstad from Griffith Centre for Systems Innovation\nThe Tour is a collaboration between the BCCM and Griffith Centre for Systems Innovation\, Griffith University\n\nYou are invited to join the BCCM’s European co-operative housing study tour in April 2024. Visit Copenhagen\, Vienna and Zurich and learn about the housing co-operative model and its benefits. The tour will cover a variety of affordable co-operative housing models and examine financing mechanisms that have ensured the growth of these sectors. \nAustralia has a housing affordability and accessibility problem. The co-operative housing models can provide affordable\, secure\, sustainable\, empowering and community-oriented housing solutions and offer a vital contribution to help tackle this crisis. The rental housing co-operative model is a small but well-established part of the community housing sector in Australia\, but its advantages are not well known. The prevalence of shared or limited equity model of housing co-operatives\, in which residents contribute to the cost of housing\, is unknown in Australia. Rental and limited/shared equity housing co-operatives can offer a crucial “missing middle” to the available housing options. \nThis is a boutique tour with limited places\, which will enable close access and practical experiences with co-operatives and their leaders. The BCCM has a strong track record of informative\, purposeful and enjoyable study tours\, including a tour of UK mutuals and a US East Coast study tour of social care co-operatives and mutuals\, both in 2018. \nParticipants will:\n\nVisit housing co-operatives and meet with co-op housing members\, hear the stories of how they were developed and get a first-hand understanding of the benefits for residents of affordable co-operative housing.\nLearn about the development of the large affordable housing co-operative sectors and the financing and legal systems that made the growth of these sectors possible.\nObtain an understanding of the societal benefits and social impact of affordable co-operative housing. Assess how we can support the growth of housing co-operatives in Australia.\n\nThe tour will be guided by:\n\nDr Sidsel Grimstad– an academic at the Griffith Centre for SystemsInnovation with expertise on housing co-operatives and who has been a housing co-operative resident in Norway\nMelina Morrison – BCCM CEO\n\nItinerary\nCopenhagen\, Denmark (3 days incl. travel) \nIn Copenhagen\, we will primarily explore the rental housing co-op sector (Almene boliger)\, which offers affordable housing to 22 per cent of Danish households. It forms part of social housing and their model of tenant involvement in financial and maintenance management decisions is unique in Europe. We will visit a rental housing co-operative in CBD Copenhagen\, targeting disadvantaged groups in the housing market. \nVienna\, Austria (3 days incl travel) \nVienna has a long history of providing affordable housing to 40 per cent of its inhabitants through limited-profit housing associations. Around 20 per cent of the housing market comprises affordable rental cooperatives with strong public and private finance support. We will visit the Austrian Federation of Housing Associations\, individual housing span class=”word-wrap”>co-ops and also meet with city planners and financial institutions that have made the growth and stability of the sector possible. \nZurich\, Switzerland (3 days incl travel) \nZurich has strong government support for Limited-profit housing co-op development\, which comprises around 25 per cent of the housing sector. We will meet with the Federation for Zurich Co-operative Housing and visit individual housing co-operatives such as Kalkbreite\, Kraftwerk\, Heizenholz and Mehr Als Wohnen. \nCost and inclusions\n2024 indicative cost is AUD$19\,000.00 per person subject to internal European flight costs (excluding flights to and from Europe). \nParticipants are to make their way to Copenhagen. The tour will visit Copenhagen\, Vienna and Zurich. \nPrice includes accommodation and breakfast in 4-star hotels\, transport for the whole tour (excluding flights to and from Europe) and some meals. DESCRIPTION:Invitation only \nBCCM is hosting an invitation-only Boardroom Roundtable on the Competition Review\, with the Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP\, Assistant Minister for Competition\, at The Fullerton Hotel\, Sydney on Friday\, 5 April 2024\, 9 – 11.00 am (AEDT). \nOn 23 August 2023\, the Australian Treasurer announced a Competition Review. The Review will last two years and will provide advice to the government on how to improve competition across the economy. The Review will look at competition laws\, policies and institutions to ensure they remain fit‑for‑purpose for the modern economy. \nCompetition policy impacts the success of co-operatives including those operating in the retail\, marketing and primary production. She is the founder CEO of Australia’s first national body for cooperatives\, the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM). \nUnder Melina’s leadership\, the BCCM has achieved fundamental reforms to level the playing field for cooperatives. She commissioned the first study on the size and impact of Australia’s cooperative sector creating the first evidence base to advocate for better support for cooperatives. Melina also led the development of Mutual Value Measurement\, a framework to measure the total value created by coops\, with research partner Monash University. \nMelina was at the forefront of advocating and developing amendments to Australian law\, opening new opportunities for cooperative businesses to access capital to grow whilst safeguarding their cooperative status for future generations. Melina is a director of Australian Mutuals Foundation which funds development of financial cooperatives in South-East Asia. \nMelina is a former editor of the ICA Digest and worker on the ICA’s International Year of Cooperatives and Blueprint for a Cooperative Decade communications campaigns. \n \nRoz Henry\, CEO\, Cooperative Business New Zealand\nRoz Henry joined Cooperative Business as CEO in 2019. She has worked with the board to implement a strategy to build greater knowledge and understanding of the model by our government\, expand capability across our business communities governors and leaders along with establishing key partnerships. This is critical given the importance of co-op’s and mutuals to the New Zealand economy. \nRoz’s earlier career laid the foundations for her joining Cooperative Business NZ. Starting out with the New Zealand Dairy Board (now Fonterra) one of our largest co-op’s globally\, followed by an extensive period management consulting domestically and internationally\, working with a range of corporates\, co-operatives and government agencies\, along with heading up operations within a regional government agency\, has enabled her to utilise this experience and network to best support our business community. \n \nJacky Mills\, Chief Experience Officer\, Capricorn Society\nJacky was appointed as Capricorn’s Chief Experience Officer in March 2023. She is responsible for identifying and implementing strategies related to the overall experience of the Capricorn community. This includes the core functions of brand\, marketing\, market research\, the rewards program and external communications\, along with developing customised experiences designed to deliver on Capricorn’s vision and purpose. \nPrior to joining Capricorn\, Jacky held sales\, marketing and operational leadership positions at organisations including QBE Insurance\, IAG and Wesfarmers Insurance. Previously serving on the boards of Transit New Zealand and Fonterra\, Nicola remains a crucial advocative voice for the co-operative business model. \nIn 2018\, Nicola was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for service to agribusiness. \n \nDr Ann Apps\, Honorary Lecturer\, School of Law and Justice\, University of Newcastle\nDr. Ann Apps is currently an Honorary Lecturer in School of Law and Justice at University of Newcastle Law School and an Honorary Fellow in the Laureate Research Program\, ‘Global Corporations and International Law’ at Melbourne University. Ann is a member of the ICA Law Committee. She has represented the ICA (Global) and the ICA Asia-Pacific on several projects\, including as a sub-regional legal expert  for the Legal Framework Analysis for Oceania in the ICA-EU Partnership on Co-operative Development\, the UNDESA Workshop on “The Role of Co-operatives in Sustainable Development in Asia-Pacific Countries” in Fiji\, and a project to build a regional framework for co-operative law in the South Pacific. \nTogether with her colleague\, Dr Sidsel Grimstad\, Ann was involved in the design and delivery of a co-operative law and governance module in a post graduate program on co-operative management and organisation at University of Newcastle. She has also designed co-operative law units to be included in other mainstream courses on business and corporations’ law. \nAnn is admitted as a solicitor of the NSW Supreme Court  and has practice experience in property\, commercial law\, and civil litigation. Ann has published in the areas of tort\, co-operative law and the law relating to mutuals. She has recently been awarded a PhD in Law. Her thesis considered the impact of law and regulation on co-operatives and mutuals in Australia. Her research interests include co-operative law and governance\, and the broader fields of corporate governance\, corporate social responsibility\, and legal models for social enterprise.

SUMMARY:Communications Forum – BCCM Leaders’ Summit
DESCRIPTION:BCCM members \nThe BCCM will host our inaugural Communications Forum at the 2023 BCCM Leaders’ Summit. This facilitated workshop will examine how to use marketing and communications to capitalise on consumer interest in socially purposed businesses. \nPolling that the BCCM conducted earlier in the year shows that most members of a co-op or mutual are unaware of the organisation’s ownership structure – consistent with the results of our 2017 and 2012 surveys. At the same time\, participation in co-ops and mutuals has grown with a younger generation that is increasingly interested in doing business with purpose-led organisations. \nIn this 2½ hour workshop\, we’ll analyse the results of our polling trends and explore the messaging blueprint the BCCM has created for co-ops and mutuals to communicate the value they create for our economy and society. In the participatory section\, attendees will co-design a communications roadmap for capitalising on this consumer interest in our business values and discuss how to use this to leverage their brand proposition. \nThe workshop will take place on 25 October as part of the BCCM Leaders’ Summit. DESCRIPTION:Invitation only – BCCM members \nThis BCCM forum\, combining our retail and buying group co-operatives is a roundtable\, Chatham House discussion on the challenges and opportunities for co-operative retail\, buying and marketing groups including rising costs of insurance\, workforce and talent acquisition issues\, supply chain disruption\, leasing\, energy and transport inflation\, digital innovation\, competition policy and accessing capital for growth. \nMr Qian Xiao Tong from FairPrice Co-operative\, the largest food retailer in Singapore with 35 per cent market share\, will be our guest speaker. Founded by the labour movement in 1973\, NTUC FairPrice’s mission is to moderate the cost of living in Singapore. From one supermarket\, it has grown to become a leading retailer in Singapore serving more than half a million shoppers daily through a network of over 370 outlets. It comprises FairPrice supermarkets\, FairPrice Finest\, FairPrice Xtra\, FairPrice Shop\, Cheers convenience stores\, FairPrice Xpress\, and Unity pharmacy. Its e-commerce portal draws over 700\,000 visitors monthly. NTUC FairPrice also owns a Fresh Food Distribution Centre and a centralised warehousing and distribution company. \nThis forum will be held as part of the BCCM annual Leaders’ Summit. \nThe Forum is open to all BCCM full and associate member co-operatives that operate a supermarket\, hardware store\, rural supply store or other retail outlet. DESCRIPTION:Mutual mindset: An introduction to co-operatives and mutuals\nDo you have new employees unfamiliar with co-operative and mutual structures and their purpose? Or do you have directors and executives looking to deepen their knowledge of the sector? This is a 2-hour online program designed to provide a general introduction to the co-ops and mutual industry in Australia and globally. \nThis course is suitable for anyone new to co-operatives and mutuals and those looking for a refresher and information on the live sector. He has previously worked for the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation and within the Higher Education international and research sectors. He has an Honours in Archaeology\, Masters in Project Management\, Graduate Diploma in Business Law and has recently completed a Diploma of Food Science and Technology and a Certificate in Cosmetic Chemistry. \n \nTarnya Fraser\, Deputy Chair\, Quairading Farmers Co-Op\nTarnya Fraser is the current Deputy Chair and manager of special projects for the Quairading Farmers Co-operative. She previously worked in banking and finance. Tarnya has a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture)\, Bachelor of Commerce and a Masters in Business Administration\, all from the University of WA. Tarnya has a passion for keeping rural communities thriving and sees co-ops as integral to this.
