DESCRIPTION:Mutual mindset: An introduction to co-operatives and mutuals\nDo you have new employees unfamiliar with co-operative and mutual structures and their purpose? He continues to lead and manage a sustained period of significant growth and success in Almondco’s long history and is a strong advocate for promoting Australian almonds as a premium\, food safe product on the world stage. Brenton has been an active industry participant\, by providing long service as a Director of the Almond Board of Australia (ABA) and was Chairman from 2007 to 2009.  Mr Woolston also held the position of President of the Australian Nut Industry Council (ANIC) from 2006 to 2009. Brenton has represented and presented on behalf of the Australian almond industry at several international conferences and events. \n \n\nAngela Yee\, CEO\, Supporting Independent Living Cooperative (SILC)\nAngela has over 20 years experience disability services in government and not for profit organisations\, across frontline and management roles.  Her vision for a more inclusive society for people with disability\, positions her well to lead a strategic vision inspired by members of the SILC cooperative. Angela has a background in Occupational Therapy and holds a Master of Health Science (Developmental Disability). She is trained in Asset Based Community Development and has led projects to build more inclusive communities for people with disabilities. SUMMARY:Sustainability Strategy for Co-operatives and Mutuals course - Module 3 launches
DESCRIPTION:A new internationally accredited training programme with consultancy input focussing on the ‘E’ in ESG and helping CMEs respond to the net zero imperative\nThe BCCM is launching a world-first accredited sustainability training programme for co-operative and mutual enterprises (CMEs) developed by sustainability strategist and educator Peter Watts. This will help CME leaders to understand key sustainability issues and equip them to lead their organisation in developing a strategy (or improving an existing one). \n\nDo you understand the opportunities from the low-carbon transition?\nAre you ‘E ready’ in your ESG framework? Do you have a strategy in place? Katrina and Adria have made a significant contribution in establishing the Elevate Co-operative\, a national secondary home care co-operative that will provide value added services to the national network of home care co-operatives across the US. \nElevate Co-operative’s mission is to drive the profitability\, growth and influence of home care cooperatives for the mutual benefit of caregivers and clients. Elevate Co-operative is built upon the culture of best practice sharing and peer learning\, elevating what’s already been accomplished through enhanced cross-cooperative collaboration to take the model to the next level. In the US\, there are 17 home care cooperatives in operation across nine states and Puerto Rico\, employing over 2500 caregivers\, and over a dozen new start-up initiatives underway in as many states.\n \nKatrina Kazda\nProgram Director\, ICA Home Care \nKatrina joined the ICA Group in January 2017 and has been leading the organisation’s home care work since. As Director of ICA’s Home Care Program\, Katrina leads the development and implementation of ICA’s national home care strategy\, including Elevate Cooperative\, and participates in a variety of hands-on development activities\, including strategic growth consulting\, start-up consulting\, educational programming for the National Home Care Cooperatives Conference and the National Home Care Cooperative Initiative—sector benchmarking\, and more. Katrina has co-authored over a dozen research studies and articles on home care cooperative development and scale\, including Profitability\, Growth\, and Influence: Elevating the Home Care Cooperative Sector with Formalized National Collaboration (January 2021) and The Cooperative Solution to the Caregiver Crisis: A National Strategy Analysis (January 2017).\n \nAdria Powell\nPresident & CEO\, Cooperative Home Care Associates\, Board Member\, Elevate Co-operative \nAdria is President and CEO of Co-operative Home Care Associates (CHCA)\, the largest employee-owned co-operative business in the country. Adria is responsible for the oversight of more than 2\,000 home care workers and over 100 administrative staff. CHCA has been operating for 32 years and is firmly anchored in the Bronx. SUMMARY:Learning from alternatives and alternative ways of knowing
DESCRIPTION:Organiser\nUniversity of Sydney Business School \nLocation\nRoom 2050 \, Abercrombie Building (H70)\, The University of Sydney \nPresenter\nLeanne Cutcher is Professor of Management and Organisation Studies at the University of Sydney Business School. Leanne’s research studies organisational discourses and practices and how they impact equity and inclusion for organisations\, the people who work in them and the wider communities in which they are embedded. She has conducted this research in a wide range of organisational contexts including both the for-profit and not-profit sectors. This research has been published in leading\, international journals. Leanne was awarded the 2022 International Federation of Scholarly Association of Management\, ‘Excellence in Indigenous Management Scholarship’ Award. Leanne’s research into Indigenous-owned community organisations has been funded by a 2023 Australian Research Council Discovery Grant. \nAbstract\nIndigenous community-owned organisations and cooperatives can both be described as alternative forms of organisation. Co-operatives and mutuals have been described as a sort of communitarianism or collectivism\, in which individuals are tied to others through a variety of economic and social links (Parker\, Fournier & Reedy\, 2007). Indigenous community-owned organisations do not fit neatly into dominant systems of (economic) value as they seek to meet the social and financial needs of their communities while honoring culture and kinship (Altman et al.\, 2012). \nBoth forms of organisations cannot be ‘read’ through dominant management concepts because they are seeking to offer an alternative to mainstream\, capitalist forms of organisation (Banerjee & Linstead\, 2004). It follows then that when we study such organisation\, we need to be open to alternative ways of knowing and alternative methodologies (Bartlett\, et al 2012). If we can do this our research might inspire novel ideas about organisations and challenge prevailing notions\, making way for alternative theories of organisation (Love 2020). \nIn this presentation\, Leanne Cutcher will share her experience of partnering with Traditional Credit Union\, Australia’s only Indigenous-owned financial services organisation to reflect on how she needed to recognise the limitations of her prior understanding\, be open to new knowledges and alternative ways of theorising. \nRegister\nFind out more and register to attend on the University of Sydney Business School website.

SUMMARY:Co-operatives and Mutuals Strategic Development Program
DESCRIPTION:Co-operatives and Mutuals Strategic Development Program (CMSDP) is offered through AIM WA UWA Business School Executive Education. This three-day program has been designed by Winthrop Professor Tim Mazzarol following extensive research into the needs of co-operative and mutual organisations. Discounts are available for the BCCM’s members. \nThis face to face program is fully comprehensive and allows for a deep dive into the individual issues and opportunities that face participants and their organisations. \nThe program will focus on the sustainability\, performance\, and resilience of co-operative and mutual organisations. \nThe crucial need for the CMSDP\nWhile there are many general management and development programs on the market\, most do not meet the specific requirements of this sector\, which has acknowledged the need for a dedicated course which captures the unique nature of the co-operative enterprise business model. \nMany aspects of the way co-operative and mutual enterprises are managed are similar to more conventional businesses. However\, there are also many important differences. These relate to areas such as their governance\, distribution of share capital and voting rights\, human resources\, communications\, marketing and strategic purpose. \nLearning outcomes\n\n\n\nCompare and contrast the co-operative and mutual business model with that of investor-owned businesses\nExhibit knowledge of the co-operative and mutual business model as it exists locally\, nationally and internationally\nDemonstrate an ability to apply their understanding of co-operative and mutual enterprise business model dynamics to the solving of managerial problems\nEvaluate the impact\, and make strategic decisions in relation to:\n\ngovernment policies and legal environments\ncompetitive market dynamics\nsocial cooperation within their member community\, and\nthe impact of the natural environment\n\n\nUnderstand the nature of member loyalty and engagement within a co-operative and mutual enterprise and how to strengthen and retain member commitment.\n\n\n\n\n\nModules\n\n\nModule 1: Understanding Co-Operative and Mutual Business Models\n\nModule 2: Governance and Leadership in Member Owned Businesses\n\nModule 3: Marketing Our Co-Operative Advantage (MOCA)\n\nModule 4: Financing Co-Operative and Mutual Businesses\n\nModule 5: Legislative Structures and their Impact on Co-Operative and Mutual Enterprises\n\nAbout the presenter\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is facilitated by Professor Tim Mazzarol who is a world expert in the cooperative and mutual sector. DESCRIPTION:A new internationally accredited training programme with consultancy input focussing on the ‘E’ in ESG and helping CMEs respond to the net zero imperative – early-bird prices available now for February 2023\nThe BCCM is launching a world-first accredited sustainability training programme for co-operative and mutual enterprises (CMEs) developed by sustainability strategist and educator Peter Watts. This will help CME leaders to understand key sustainability issues and equip them to lead their organisation in developing a strategy (or improving an existing one). \n\nDo you understand the opportunities from the low-carbon transition?\nAre you ‘E ready’ in your ESG framework? Do you have a strategy in place? Does your existing one need an overhaul\, or are you starting from scratch?\nDo you feel equipped to discuss environmental/sustainability issues with your internal and external stakeholders? For example\, senior team\, employees\, members\, etc.\nDo you feel you understand different accreditations\, ESG frameworks and reporting standards?\n\nThe training course consists of recorded lectures and self-directed learning with live tutor-led workshops across three modules (7-8 hours per module). Participants will develop an actionable plan to protect their members and build value and resilience for the future.
