Nundah Co-op shortlisted in Social Enterprise Awards

15 May 2014

Nundah Community Enterprises Cooperative (NCEC) has been shortlisted as an Australian Social Enterprise of the Year, for the Social Enterprise Awards, presented by Social Traders. NCEC is one of five organisations shortlisted in the small (employing <25 people) category. The winner wil receive $5,000 in prize money.

The co-operative creates sustainable employment opportunities for more than 20 members with an intellectual disability and mental health issue, through their Espresso Train Cafe and Parks and Maintenance Crew.

Richard Warner, Co-ordinator at Nundah, told GiveNow News:

“As an organisation which receives no ongoing funding we need to harmonise the running of a profitable business with the creation of a supportive workplace for highly disadvantaged workers,” Mr Warner told GiveNow.

“What keeps us inspired is seeing people puffed up with pride that they now have a job. You can’t put a price on that, it’s our reason for being and what keeps us going when the going gets tough.”

The Social Enterprise Awards take place 12 June in Melbourne, as part of the Social Enterprise Masters Conference. Find out more about the Social Enterprise Awards or register online.
