The Bunya Fund

The Bunya Fund is the first co-op movement fund in Australia to support co-operative development. It was launched by the BCCM in June 2022, at the 2022 BCCM CEO Summit.

The Bunya Fund’s objectives

  • Provide financial, educational and mentor support to co-operatives
  • Address the funding and advice gap for start-up and early-stage co-ops and mutuals
  • Support growth of co-ops in the Australian economy
  • Build momentum for more economic co-operation among co-operatives

How will The Bunya Fund achieve its objectives?

  • The fund will provide small grants to early-stage co-ops, primarily for advice and capacity building
  • Applications will be assessed on structure, viability and social/economic/cultural/environmental impact
  • The impact of funding will be maximised through BCCM and Funder expertise and in-kind support
  • Impact evaluation of funding rounds will be conducted to improve the Fund over time

What Funders receive

  • An opportunity to multiply your impact in the community through funding, mentorship and long-term partnerships

Why Bunya?

The bunya tree is sacred to Indigenous Australians for a long time. They are an important source of food, timber and fibre to their livelihood and the community.

Bunya’s proposition

Like the significance the bunya has to Indigenous Australians, the fund aims to be the source of enrichment to co-operatives, enabling prosperity and equity.
