Submission: Wool selling systems review

12 March 2015

BCCM has made a brief submission to the Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) review of wool selling systems, in response to an issues paper released December 2014.

Our submission refers the AWI review panel to our recent submissions to the Agricultural Competitiveness Review and makes the case for co-operative structures in allowing agricultural businesses greater economies of scale. BCCM also noted the competition and marketing benefits that could be provided by the structure.

AWI is a not-for-profit company that invests in R&D and marketing to increase the long-term profitability of Australian woolgrowers.

The key objectives of the AWI review are to improve the returns that woolgrowers receive for their wool through:

  • evaluating whether greater efficiencies and cost savings within the exchange of ownership between the seller and the first buyer are attainable
  • understanding the potential for increased competitive tension throughout the wool selling process and how it can be achieved, and
  • determining whether there is sufficient transparency within the exchange of ownership to allow woolgrowers to make the most informed commercial decisions about their wool growing enterprise.
