“After decades of declining interest, the peak body for co-operative businesses, the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) says more and more agricultural businesses are looking to the business model.
“Seven new agricultural co-ops formed in 2020/21, while the BCCM fielded inquires from 650 farmers about the cooperative business model.
“CEO Melina Morrison says the pandemic and the on-going supply chain crisis has led to a renewed interest in local ownership of everything from farm to plate.
“And Enrique de los Rios, the general manager of leading Spanish farming co-op Unica Group discusses the benefits of the model for their members as they deal with severe drought and rising input costs.”
