Co-operative helps banana growers affected by cyclone

09 April 2015

After the devastation left by Cyclone Olwyn in WA last month, a co-operative has found an innovative way to help banana growers in the area whose banana plantations have been decimated.

The Sweeter Banana Cooperative has come together with banana growers in Gascoyne to use bananas salvaged after the cyclone in order to make banana bread. The bread, which will be sold in 30 outlets in WA, is made up of bananas which would have otherwise been thrown out due to the effects of the cyclone. Although growers face millions of dollars in losses, this idea and product gives the community a continual income and showcases the social and economic benefits co-operatives provide to communities across Australia.
