Co-operative housing: Bridging the urban divide

16 June 2025

The latest issue of the International Cooperative Alliance Asia Pacific (ICAAP) journal Coop Dialogue is dedicated to housing co-operatives. It covers news from across the Asia Pacific region on ‘Cooperative Housing: Bridging the Urban Divide.’

This journal showcases examples from Japan, Jordan, India, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Australia, and includes student rental co-ops, housing for plantation workers, slum replacement, flood recovery and pathways to ownership. Reading through the journal demonstrates the diverse ways the co-operative model is being used to support people to meet the need, and their rights, for secure and affordable housing.

In combination these articles journey through the problems and barriers facing access to adequate housing, and the inspirational solutions being pursued through organising and co-operating.

Two articles from Australia are featured. On page 26 is an article about the BCCM’s Housing Strategy by Linda Seaborn and on page 40 is an article by Dr Sidsel Grimstad on the BCCM’s study tour to Europe in 2024.
