Second reading of the Associations and Co-operatives Legislation Amendment Bill 2024

18 November 2024

The BCCM welcomes the second reading of the Associations and Co-operatives Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 by the Western Australian Legislative Assembly on 13 November. The amendments to the Co-operatives Act 2009 in WA are to ensure that co-ops can conduct their general meetings digitally.

The BCCM has advocated for this Bill working with Co-ops WA.

Speaking about the Bill, Mr David Scaife MLA noted that ‘It is important that we have good cooperative legislation because we have significant cooperatives like CBH in Western Australia. We also have smaller cooperatives like the Denmark Co-operative…That co-operative has been going for years, but it was basically a way for that community to maintain a general store and sell hardware supplies and those sorts of things for the benefit of the community when perhaps it was more marginal.’

The Bill is still to be considered by the WA Legislative Council (upper house).
