Boosting competition and consumer choice – a partnership with the Commonwealth

01 February 2024

The BCCM has made a Pre-Budget Submission calling on the Federal Government to partner with Australian co-operatives and mutuals to deliver more competition, consumer choice and economic dynamism in the Australian economy.

Australians are acutely aware of the markets where competition is lacking, impacting cost of living, equitable access to services and fair prices. But what are the solutions?

Competition and choice for consumers is maintained when there is a diverse range of business types available including more co-operatives and mutuals.

Such corporate diversity improves service and pricing because it facilitates a range of business strategies, each pursuing varied business purposes – for example, to serve customer needs as an alternative to prioritising shareholder value.
