Mutual Mindset: An Introduction to Co-operatives and Mutuals

Do you have new employees unfamiliar with co-operative and mutual structures and their purpose? Or do you have directors and executives looking to deepen their knowledge of the sector? This is a 2-hour online program designed to provide a general introduction to the co-ops and mutual industry in Australia and globally.

This course is suitable for anyone new to co-operatives and mutuals and those looking for a refresher and information on the live sector. It can be tailored to your existing induction training program, or your employees can take one of our online classes throughout the year.

It is facilitated by well-known co-operative development expert Antony McMullen and includes live interaction and two guest speakers.

About this course

The key objective is to educate and inspire people working in the sector to understand more about the unique role and contribution of co-operatives and mutuals to help them in their role in their co-operative or mutual, whether frontline staff, management or directors. It will help build a meaningful connection between the employee and the wider co-operative and mutual sector, as well as strengthen the relationship with their individual employer.

This is achieved through a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles which underpin co-operatives and mutuals as businesses that put purpose, people, and communities at the heart of the enterprise.

It is delivered in a live, interactive webinar structure with a unique live Q&A with two sector leaders. Knowledge is delivered in a fun and accessible format.

Bernie Lloyd

Bernie Lloyd, Chair, Bank First

Bernie brings to the Board extensive educational experience in rural and metropolitan schools as a classroom teacher as well as executive manager. Her leadership expertise resides in long-term strategic planning, building capacity in teams and sustaining and expanding growth in organisations.

She has coached individuals and teams, and facilitated workshops for aspiring leaders with an emphasis on building positive environments which sustain and empower. She understands the interdependence between schools and their communities and how high levels of trust enable productivity. Her governance experience includes school councils and executive roles with VASSP (Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals). She led the Victorian chapter of Principals Australia for three years. Bernie joined the Board as Intern in 2010, was elected by the Members in 2011, and was appointed Chair of the Board in 2015.

Bernie is also a Director of Youthrive, a rural foundation which provides support and opportunities for young people to build agency and capability.

Basil Lenzo

Basil Lenzo, Chair, Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative

Basil Lenzo is a third-generation fisherman based in Fremantle and has been a skipper, owner and investor in the industry for over 40 years. He became a shareholder in 2004 and a member of the board in 2007. Basil brings strong business, and investment experience, has a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Western Australia and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Basil also serves as an independent director on the Rural West Board.

Basil is a member of the Performance and Nomination Committee.
