In a piece in The Australian yesterday, CBH Group CEO and BCCM Chair, Andy Crane explains how the co-operative business model has benefited CBH’s grain grower members while making the co-operative more competitive, efficient and sustainable for the future. CBH is Australia’s largest grain exporter and the second biggest privately owned business.
Speaking from the International Summit of Cooperatives in Québec, Dr Crane pointed to the group’s support for the wider co-operative sector as it is a founding member of the BCCM.
Earlier this year the Federal Senate handed down their report on the role, importance and overall performance of the sector in the economy which gave “very powerful support for the (co-op) business model”, especially its focus on measures to facilitate capital raising remarked Dr Crane.
Concluding, Dr Crane said co-operatives can often be viewed as the “hidden part of the economy” and the sector needs to do more to promote their role in the economy and the essential diversity the business model brings.
