UN urges development partnership with the co-operative movement

14 September 2023

Global apex body for co-operatives and mutuals, the International Cooperative Alliance, has welcomed the 2023 UN Secretary General report on cooperatives in social development asking Member States to work with the co-operative movement to advance economic and environmental wellbeing.

BCCM CEO Melina Morrison said, “Co-operatives and mutuals have long been the bedrock of social and economic inclusion for marginalised communities across the nation and around the world. We will be asking the Federal Government for concrete actions to strengthen the co-operative movement to do more good work to support Australians who are struggling the most. We agree with the UN’s assessment of the five key actions to strengthen and support co-ops and mutuals; a better policy and regulatory environment; education and capacity-building; a culture of cooperation; access to funding and finance; and building networks and partnerships.”
