Co-ops could deliver services

Governments should look to use co-operatives and mutuals to provide public services such as child and aged care, transport and housing, the head of the country’s largest co-operative has said.

Andrew Crane, chief of grain handler CBH Group, made the comments at the launch of a national business council for the sector.

The Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals opened in Melbourne yesterday. It aims to raise public awareness about the sector.

Mr Crane said there was greater scope for co-operatives and mutuals to provide in-demand public services.

“One of the areas we see a real opportunity for growth is in public-sector mutuals,” Mr Crane said.
